Learn More WBE

A WBE is a women-owned business that has been officially certified through an organization like the WBENC.

To be a certified as a WBE, an organization must meet the following requirements:

  • Majority (at least 51%) ownership by one or more women
  • Demonstrated proof of female management and control of business
  • Unrestricted female control of the business in legal documents and day-to-day operations
  • A woman holding the highest defined title in the company’s legal documents
  • Documented evidence of female contribution of capital and/or industry expertise
  • Status of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident for woman owner(s) constituting majority ownership

If your organization meets these requirements, you would be eligible to apply through the WBENC to be certified as an official WBE company.

As a certified WBE through the WBENC, your organization will be access to:

  • Networking, events, mentoring, and education opportunities along with professional development problems and other business tools and resources
  • Eligibility for regional and national awards and recognition
  • The Women Owned Logo and Women’s Business Enterprise Seal to promote your business and expand your company’s visibility
  • Women-owned businesses make up 39.1% of businesses, totalling a 13.6% growth in women-owned businesses from 2019 to 2023.
  • WBE employs 12.2 million people, totalling 9.2% of employees nationally.
  • Revenue generated by WBE total around $2.7 trillion, totally 5.8% of revenue generated nationally.
  • From 2019-2023 nearly half a million of the small women-owned businesses grew their aggregate revenues by about 30% to reach the “$1 million in revenue milestone”.
  • Women own 2,267,000 of business in the other services companies industry category, accounting for 16.2% of all women-owned businesses (2023).
  • 2,017,000 businesses in the scientific and technical industry category are owned and operated by women, accounting for 14.4% of all women-owned businesses (2023).
  • 1,671,000 businesses in the administrative industry category are owned by women, accounting for 11.9% of all women-owned businesses (2023).
